PROJECT-BASED LANGUAGE LEARNING IN SHL EDUCATION:
FROM DESIGN TO ASSESSMENT
WORKSHOP & OPEN FORUM
This continuation workshop [the first workshop on PBLL was offered online in Fall 2021] summarizes core principles of Project-Based Language Learning (PBLL) and its integration in diverse Spanish as a Heritage Language (SHL) classrooms. After revising PBLL effectiveness for teaching SHL learners (Parra et al. 2018; Carreira 2019; Helmer 2020), we will analyze various PBLL implementations from its initial design, implementation, and assessment to select those options that best match participants’ student populations and goals.
In the second part of the workshop, participants will work on templates and digital resources to design their own projects. The workshop focuses on analyzing successful SHL projects (photo-essays, cultural videos, large translation tasks) which will serve as initial blueprints for participants to design their own projects. Step-by-step guides, revision of best practices, and issues on project assessment will be presented and discussed.
